No. 12 Men’s Golf wins Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The No. 12 Texas Men’s Golf carded a 3-under-par 347 on Wednesday afternoon to earn a one-stroke victory in the 75th annual Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. The Longhorns have now captured back-to-back team titles after claiming the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational (April 2-3). This marks the first time Texas has won team championships at consecutive tournaments since April 2017, when UT claimed the top spot at the Longhorn Shootout (April 15) and the Big 12 Championship (April 26).

The Western Intercollegiate used a six-player lineup for each team, with the best five scores counting for the team score. Texas recorded a 54-hole total of 25-over-par 1075 (371-357-347) to finish one stroke ahead of runner-up and No. 5 Pepperdine at 26-over-par 1076 (370-361-345). No. 6 Washington placed third at 41-over-par 1091 (373-376-342). The 14-team field at the Western Intercollegiate included four squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (April 1).

Texas had four players earn top-10 finishes in the individual standings. Senior Pierceson Coody tied for second at 2-over-par 212 (70-73-69), just three strokes behind medalist Dylan Menante of Pepperdine at 1-under-par 209 (70-72-67). After not playing in competitive collegiate events since mid-October due to an injury, Coody returned to the lineup and claimed the individual title at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational before earning a tie for second at the Western Intercollegiate.

Wednesday’s final round was played in completely different conditions than the previous two rounds on Monday and Tuesday, when high winds and cool rain were the norm. A total of 36 golfers shot par or better in the final round on Wednesday compared to 11 in the first two rounds combined.

UT juniors Travis Vick (73-73-68) and Mason Name (78-66-70) and senior Cole Hammer (73-70-71) all tied for seventh place at 4-over-par 214. Freshman Alejandro Gonzalez provided a huge boost to the Longhorns with a final-round score of 1-under-par 69 on Wednesday.

The Longhorns return to the course when they compete at the Big 12 Championship on April 25-27 (Monday-Wednesday) at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
