Skyline, Chelsea and Greenhills claim boys golf regional titles

Defending Division 1 boys golf state champion Ann Arbor Skyline led the way for area teams who claimed regional championships this week.

In addition to Skyline’s showing, Chelsea and Ann Arbor Greenhills also finished atop of their respective regionals to claim titles and advance to the state finals.

Skyline has been the favorite to repeat all season and that will likely continue following another impressive performance at regionals on Wednesday at Cascades Golf Course in Jackson.

The Eagles won the team title by 22 strokes and saw individual state runner-up Ieuan Jones lead the way for the individual crown as he shot a 1-under par 71 to earn medalist honors.

Mitchell Strickland wasn’t far behind with a second-place finish as he shot an even par 72. Hank Roebuck finished seventh (77), Andrew Slade (80) took 13th and Luke Richard finished 17th with a score of 82.

Along with Skyline, Dexter and Saline each punched their tickets to the D1 state finals as both teams finished second and third, respectively.

Dexter was led by Dom Sortor who paced the Dreadnaughts with a 74 to finish fourth overall. Allen Labadie placed ninth with a score of 78, Niko Michos (83) took 19th, Dylan Hutchinson (87) placed 31st and Braden Richards took 48th with a score of 99.

Saline’s top golfer was Colton Cundiff, who shot a 75 to finish fifth. Zeb Siegel shot an 80 for 13th place, while Giuseppe Giacalone (83) took 19th, Kieran Dean (85) placed 24th and Brian Kang (89) finished 36th overall.

Ann Arbor Huron’s Brendan Baidel qualified as an individual as he shot a 76 to place sixth overall and second among the top three individual qualifiers.

Chelsea claimed the regional title in D2 on Tuesday thanks to a comeback effort in the final nine holes of the match.

The Bulldogs trailed by 10 strokes heading into the back 9 and rallied to edge South Lyon East 310-312 to win the regional title.

Three of Chelsea’s players finished in the Top 10 and the team had four golfers in the Top 12.

The Bulldogs were led by Reed Murray, who shot a 71 to finish second overall. In addition to Murray’s performance Jace DeRosia took sixth with a score of 78, followed by Brian Tillman, who placed ninth at 79, Jack Murray took 12th with an 82 and Ryan Martin rounded out the round with an 89 to take 34th.

Greenhills also squeaked out the D3 regional championship by two strokes on Tuesday at West Shore Country Club in Grosse Ile.

The Gryphons pulled out the victory with three players finishing in the Top four, including Beau Brewer, who won the individual regional championship with a score of 73.

Max Shulman placed third with a 78 and Cale Piedmonte-Lang finished fourth with an 80. Arjun Prabhakar (88) took 21st and Cameron Miller (90) placed 26th.

Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard missed the cut, but did see Shane Heiser earn a spot in the state finals as the individual qualifier as he shot an 82.

The three regional championship teams and additional qualifiers will compete in their respective state final tournaments on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11.
