Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 50 Vanderbilt 5-2 on Senior Day

OXFORD, Miss – No. 36 Ole Miss men’s tennis (16-11, 4-8 SEC) won 5-2 versus No. 50 Vanderbilt (14-11, 2-10 SEC) on Sunday.

Head Coach Toby Hansson and the Ole Miss Rebels earned their fourth straight victory on Sunday, defeating the Commodores 5-2. The Rebels played the match inside the William F. Galtney Tennis Center due to inclement weather conditions. Ole Miss honored the careers of Jan Soren Hain and Finn Reynolds in the final match of the 2022 regular season.

The Rebels started the match by winning the doubles point. Hain breezed to a Senior Day victory, 6-1, alongside Simon Junk at No. 2 doubles versus Vanderbilt’s George Harwell and Joubert Klopper. Vanderbilt tied the doubles section, 1-1, by taking no. 1 doubles, 6-3. Seconds later, the Rebels clinched the doubles point on Court No. 3. Nikola Slavic and John Hallquist Lithén defeated Michael Ross and Jeremie Casabon, 6-3, this time Ole Miss ahead 1-0 in the match.

Ole Miss carried the momentum from doubles into singles, winning four of six individual matches. No. 28 Slavic won first, earning a straight-set win over No. 31 Harwell, 6-1, 6-4, to put the Rebels ahead 2-0. Slavic earned his eighth ranked singles win of 2022. Simon Junk extended the Ole Miss lead to 3-0, defeating Marcus Ferreira in two sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Senior Reynolds clinched the match for the Rebels, earning a ranked victory versus no. 88 Klopper 7-5, 6-3. The Rebels clinched the victory at 4-0. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt played out the final three remaining matches.

The Commodores earned their first decision point of the day by taking No. 6 singles in three sets. Jakob Cadonau got the start on Court No. 6, falling to Vanderbilt’s Sisam. Lithén put Ole Miss ahead 5-1 by winning a third-set 10-point tiebreak 10-1 over Max Freeman. Siim Troost claimed the final match of the afternoon for Vanderbilt, defeating Hain in a close three setter, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The Rebels won 5-2.

Up Next: Ole Miss travels to Georgia for the SEC Tournament to face Auburn in the second round on Thursday. The Rebels take on the Tigers at 10 am CT.
