Quartet from Women’s Tennis named to Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team

IRVING, Texas – The University of Texas had a league-best four selections to the 2022 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship All-Tournament Team, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Sophomores Peyton Stearns, Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon and freshman Vivian Ovrootsky all earned spots in singles, and Collins and Chavatipon also garnered the accolade as a pair in doubles.

UT won the team title at the three-day event in Fort Worth, earning victories against No. 34 Iowa State (4-0) in the quarterfinals, no. 11 Oklahoma State (4-1) in the semifinals and No. 2 Oklahoma (4-2) in the final. Texas has now captured the Big 12 Tournament crown a total of 12 times (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2018, 2021 and 2022), with the last three coming under current head coach Howard Joffe.

Stearns, who also earned recognition as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer on Sunday, claimed the honor at No. 1 singles with a trio of dominant straight-set victories. She claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win against no. 61 Thesaporn Naklo of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals. Stearns added a 6-0, 6-1 victory over no. 19 Lisa Marie Rioux of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and followed with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against no. 10 Layne Sleeth of Oklahoma in Sunday’s final.

Collins received the award at No. 2 singles, as she recorded a 2-0 mark at the spot. She posted a 7-5, 6-2 win against No. 95 Ange Oby Kajuru of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals and added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 50 Carmen Corley of Oklahoma in Sunday’s championship match.

Chavatipon claimed the honor at No. 4 singles, as she registered a 2-0 mark at the position. She tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oona Orpana of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and added a 6-4, 6-1 win against Dana Guzman of Oklahoma in Sunday’s final.

Ovrootsky garnered the accolade at No. 6 singles, as she posted a 2-0 mark at the spot. She earned a 6-2, 6-3 win against Sofia Cabezas of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals and added a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ayumi Miyamoto of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals.

The tandem of Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon received the honor at No. 2 doubles, as they registered a perfect 3-0 mark at the position. The duo earned a 7-5 victory against Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas of Iowa State in Friday’s quarterfinals. Collins and Chavatipon followed with a 6-0 win over the No. The 75-ranked pair of Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo of Oklahoma State in Saturday’s semifinals and recorded a 7-6 (7-5) victory against Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisavera of Oklahoma in Sunday’s championship match.

No. 4 Texas (20-4) will learn its draw in the upcoming 2022 NCAA Championship during the Division I selection show on Monday, May 2. The show will be streamed online at www.NCAA.com beginning at 5:30 pm Central.
