The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers fought hard, but ultimately came up a match short against the Worthington boys tennis team on Tuesday, April 26.
In the end, the Trojans took the match with a 4-3 victory over the Bucs.
BEA’s singles starters were a force to be reckoned with, snagging three wins for BEA against Worthington.
Vern Johnson slammed Worthington’s Alec Langerud at No. 1 singles, defeating his opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, BEA’s Nick Frundt was just as successful against Trojan Ian Barber. Frundt also took his match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
BEA’s Joe Frundt, at No. 3 singles, was more evenly matched against Worthington’s Ezra Bonnett.
The pair battled hard for the first set, with the win ultimately going to Bonnett, 6-4. The second set was Frundt’s, 6-1. However, Bonnett surged back to take the third set, and the win, 6-2.
At No. 4 singles, Jamie Johnson booked another win for BEA against Trojan David Sternke. The match was Johnson’s in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The Buccaneer doubles players had a more difficult evening.
At No. 1 doubles, Devin Haase and Seth Stevermer battled Worthington’s Quentin Burns and Tyson Henkels through three sets, but eventually lost the match to their opponents.
The first set was Worthington’s, 6-3. BEA surged back in the second set to snag a 6-2 win. However, the victory eventually went to the Trojans after Burns and Henkels took the third set, 6-3.
John Lappe and Calvin Farrow were defeated by Worthington’s Jake Ahrenstorff and Levi Kuhl in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
Finally, Bucs Seth Mathews and James Hill played two very close sets against Matthew Becker and Steven Adams at No. 4 singles.
In the end, Worthington edged out BEA, 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (6-8).
Luverne 5, BEA 2
The rain cleared long enough for the BEA boys tennis team to rally against Luverne in an away match held on Thursday, April 21.
Unfortunately, the Buccaneers suffered their first loss of the season in the fleeting sunshine, leaving them with a 2-1 record.
Buc Vern Johnson battled Cardinal Pierce Cunningham at No. 1 singles, coming up at a loss after straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Nick Frundt also suffered a defeat to Luverne’s Griffen Jarchow at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
BEA fought hard at No. 3 singles, but Joe Frundt eventually lost the match to the Cardinals’ Blake Frahm. The first set went to Frahm 6-4, but Frahm had to battle hard to win the second set 7-6 (9-7).
At No. 4 singles, Jamie Johnson scored a victory for Blue Earth Area against Ethan Nath in two hard-won straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Doubles followed a similar pattern, with Luverne sweeping No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and BEA snagging a victory at No. 3.
BEA’s Devin Haase and Brady Lorenz faced off against Cardinals Chase Tunnisen and Logan Ommen at No. 1 double. The pairs were a close match, but Luverne eventually took the match.
The first set was BEA’s at 7-5, but Luverne took the second set 7-5, and the third super-set 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, it was BEA’s Jerry Passe and Seth Stevermer up against Cardinals Kyle Fergusen and Jase Arp. Another three-set battle eventually secured Luverne the win.
The first set went to BEA at 6-4, but the second set was Luverne’s at 6-4. Luverne took the third super-set, and the win, at 6-2.
BEA scraped a win at No. 3 doubles, with John Lappe and Calvin Farrow beating Luke Bosch and Levi Thielbar 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Weather permitting, BEA was slated to play away matches against Waseca on Thursday, April 28, and Pipestone on Friday, April 29.
The team will keep busy this week with back-to-back away matches against Redwood Valley on Monday, May 2, and St. Peter on Tuesday, May 3. You can read the results in next week’s edition of The Faribault County Register.
