Wichita Falls area regional tennis results state qualifiers

LUBBOCK – WFISD will be well-represented at the Class 5A State Tennis Tournament later this month.

And it won’t just be Rider carrying the Wichita Falls banner this year.

For the first time since 2013, Wichita Falls High is sending players to the state tournament. In fact, it’s sending four.

The Coyotes dominated the mixed doubles bracket at the Region I-5A Tournament, claiming the two state qualifying berths in Lubbock on Tuesday morning.

Also qualifying for the second straight year was Rider senior Axelle Jacquemin, who won the Region I-5A girls singles championship.

The state tournament is set for April 26-27 in San Antonio.

Hattie Berend and Steven Lee defeated Coyote teammates Trooper Denson and Jessie Stephan in the championship match, 6-1, 6-0. Denson and Stephan were forced into a playback against Aidan Gilbert and Melinda Thomas of Canyon Randall, winning the second state berth in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

The two doubles teams are the first to represent a storied Old High tennis program at state since Adam Dockery qualified in boys singles in 2013. Dockery lost in the semifinals. There have been 19 state championships won by individuals or doubles teams in Old High’s history. The last was in 2005 when Travis Stegner and Clayton Cotton combined to win the boys doubles title.
